About the photographer

Yasu Matsumoto was born in Japan. He studied photography and visual art at San Francisco Art Institute where he met his life-long mentor Linda Connor. Now, based in Tokyo, he works as a fine art photographer showing works internationally. Matsumoto uses analog photography methods such as film and wet plate collodion to "capture the invisibles" which always has been the main theme throughout his career. 

This "invisible" could be "piles of time" in one project, while it may be "aura" in another series. Not only does he believe in the magic of analog photography to capture the invisibles, he also chooses such a way to create the art that has the temperature of the artist. Including non-photographic processes like cutting and boiling the print, he intentionally leaves the residue of his existence, and wishes for the viewers to feel the warmth of it. 

With these images, Matsumoto expresses an unusual experience of his visit deep in the woods. Embraced by the overwhelming being, he entered an unusual state of mind where he felt both peace and awe. The image is deconstructed into pieces and boiled with forest's belongings such as soil to emphasise such a phenomenon. 

Matsumoto has been exhibiting works world wide such as "STORIES, MEMORIES + HISTORIES” (Center for Fine Art Photography, Colorado), "Art Basel Hong Kong” (Marco Polo Hotel, Hong Kong) and "Donggang International Photo Festival” (Donggang Museum of Photography, Seoul) while he has constantly had many solo exhibitions like "piles” (Roonee 247 Fine Art, Tokyo) in 2023.
