About the photographer

Gregg Segal is a California-based photographer and filmmaker with a BFA from the California Institute of the Arts, an MFA in dramatic writing from New York University, and an MA in education from the University of Southern California. His work centres on themes of memory, nostalgia, and family. 

Segal’s photography explores the passage of time and the complexities of family relationships. His series The Sum of Us delves into family stories, capturing the traits that define individuals and the connections that unite generations. Through layered compositions, he reflects on the joys and sorrows of union and separation, emphasising the fluidity of time and the fleeting nature of human bonds. 

In the Photography Prize Exhibition, Segal presents images from The Sum of Us, focusing on visual meditations of family history. Each piece captures the nuances of relationships across generations, using a palimpsest approach to distil the emotions of love, loss, and continuity. The series prompts reflection on how family ties shape our identities and bridge the past and present. 

Segal’s notable works include Daily Bread, published by Powerhouse Books (2019), followed by aGerman edition (2020). His Daily Bread exhibition, curated by Photoville, is on display at TheSeaport in New York through November 2024. His environmental project 7 Days of Garbage wasfeatured in The Evidence Project: A Book to Protect the Planet.
