About the photographer
Adriana Treviño is a Mexican photographer based in Northern Mexico. With a background in Spanish and Latin-American Literature and a Masters in photography from PhotoEspaña, she is currently pursuing her Ph.D. Her work primarily explores themes around femininity, using floral still lifes to metaphorically represent personal and collective experiences of womanhood.
Treviño’s work delves into the social constructs that shape women's identities, particularly her upbringing in a conservative, Catholic society. She uses flowers as central characters to evoke stories about the feminine experience, questioning the myths and narratives that have endured in the collective consciousness. Drawing inspiration from historical texts like Ovid's Fausti, she explores themes of internalised violence and entrapment. Her still lifes—often built from flowers found in her morning walks—create dreamlike environments that reflect her inner exploration, grappling with the tension between beauty and darkness.
In the Photography Prize Exhibition, Treviño presents a series of images from her ongoing garden installations. These gardens symbolise the entrapment of women in "eternal spring"—a state of forced beauty and control. Through the use of flowers, death, and shadows, her works challenge the viewer to reconsider the charm of this eternal spring, examining how ancient myths of violence and subjugation still resonate in contemporary society.
Treviño is a part of Juan Cano 68 and has exhibited with Patricia Conde Gallery, participating in As Above, So Below (2022) and during Mexico City’s Art Week Savage and Splendid Light (2023), as well as representing the gallery at Salon ACME No. 10 (2023). Her work has been selected for Nuevo León’s photographic exhibitions (2022, 2024), Arte Vivo’s auction at Museo Rufino Tamayo (2022), PhotoEspaña (Retratos, 2023), and Habitat by Fotografas Latinoamericanas in London (2024).
