About the photographer

Roman Manfredi is a British lens-based artist living and working in London. She holds an MA in Fine Art from the Royal College of Art and a BA in Fine Art from Byam Shaw School of Art, Central St Martins.

Utilising analogue photography, moving images, and sound, Manfredi's work investigates the intersections of personal narratives and political landscapes within everyday experiences. Her series, We/Us, celebrates the presence of butches and studs from working-class backgrounds across the UK, using medium-format film to explore intergenerational female masculinity through the lenses of class and race within the British landscape.

The term “butch” and “stud” (the latter often used within younger Black masculine-presenting lesbians in the UK) signifies a specific and deliberate female masculinity situated within a lesbian framework.

Manfredi's solo exhibition, We/Us: Butches and Studs from Working-Class Backgrounds, was held in 2023 in London. In 2024, she exhibited in several group shows, including the LensCulture Art Photography Awards (Winner) in New York, Reveala'T Contemporary Analog Photography Festival in Barcelona, and the Pride Photo Awards across Utrecht, Groningen, Amsterdam, and Rotterdam. Her work also featured in Gorgeousness: A Summer Pride Show, curated by Richard Renaldi in New York, and she was a winner of the 70:15:40 Project UK in London.
