About the photographer

Stefanie Langenhoven is a South African artist who graduated from the National College of Photography in Pretoria in 2004 and later studied psychotherapy in London from 2009 to 2013. Since 2015, she has been a full-time artist, earning accolades such as the British Journal of Photography's Female in Focus and LensCulture awards, alongside global exhibitions and publications. 

Langenhoven’s artistic practice centres on the feminine experience, exploring the nuances of girlhood, pregnancy, and motherhood. Her work critiques societal distortions of the female image, which impact self-perception and identity. Through her imagery, she captures ephemeral emotional states, shedding light on the invisible aspects of these experiences. Her art navigates complex intersections of love and fear, transformation and mortality, gender roles, relationships, and the subconscious realm of dreams. 

In her series The Extraordinary Beauty of Ginger-Haired Girls, she aims to reclaim the narrative around red-haired girls and women, challenging harmful stereotypes. Her project Avatãra serves as a tribute to the soul of her unborn children, exploring themes of pregnancy, motherhood, and loss. Additionally, her work in Siamese Soul investigates the profound bond between twins, reflecting on her connection with her late sibling. In Feminine Boys, she examines the expression of femininity in boys and men, challenging societal norms. 

Langenhoven's work has been exhibited in solo and group shows across South Africa, London, Paris, New York, Miami, and South Korea, including a group exhibition at LensCulture in New York.
