About the photographer

Charlotta Maria Hauksdottir is an Icelandic mixed media artist celebrated for her award-winning work. She earned her BA from the Istituto Europeo di Design in Rome and went on to receive her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. She now works and lives in California. 

Her work centres around the unique connection one has to places and moments in time, and how experiences embody and elevate those connections. In her most recent series, “Imprints,” she continues to explore the complex relationship between man and nature. For two decades she has photographed the landscapes of her native country Iceland, witnessing first hand the impacts of climate change. She articulates this in unique hand cut and layered sculptural works that simulate the physical features of the landscape with the removed parts visualising  the disappearing landscape.

“Erosion XIV” is layered on top of text about climate change, serving as a reminder of the dangers we confront. In “Erosion XIX” the absent glacier reveals a black void, representing the erosion of the landscape. But nature's resilience is an inspiration in the Resurgence pieces, where the pattern is derived from concrete cracks. Showing the persistence of life, they are a visual testament to nature's remarkable ability to endure. 

Hauksdottir’s work has been exhibited around the world, with solo exhibitions in the USA, Russia, and Iceland. Her photographs have been widely published, including a monograph “A Sense of Place - Imprints of Iceland”. Her work is also in numerous private and public collections such as Stanford Health Care, Art Institute of Chicago and Reykjavik Museum of Photography.
