About the photographer
Lee Day is a US-based photographer and technologist. A graduate of the S.I. Newhouse School for Public Communications, Day has worked across creative fields such as photojournalism, stock photography, interactive media, and fiction writing. Returning to photography, he now explores the boundaries of digital image algorithms.
Day’s work reflects the fast-paced, hyper-connected nature of our digital world. His photography captures the rush of modern life, a whirlwind of experiences shaped by algorithmic influences. His images express not only his personal reaction to this digital speed, but also question how the artificial intelligence we rely on perceives this environment, as we increasingly see the world through their lenses.
In the Photography Prize Exhibition, Day presents pieces from his Clipping Suburbia and TrainPan series. These works explore the limitations of digital algorithms, particularly in fast-moving environments like trains. The series reveals how the iPhone's panoramic image processing struggles under speed, but in its failure, creates moments of unexpected harmony between chaos and order. These works give voice to the overwhelming digital rush while highlighting the tension between technology’s precision and its flaws.
Day’s work has been exhibited at Mad Rose Gallery (NY), Soho Photo Gallery (NY), Mirage Gallery (Japan), and Front Room Gallery (NY). His series TrainPan: GPS, a multi-screen digital animation of 15,000 images, was featured at Creative Tech Week (2018), and he won a Critics Choice Award from LensCulture (2021).
