ARTIST PRIZE FAQ

How can the jury fairly evaluate and compare such diverse mediums and multidisciplinary submissions?

Our jury is made up of an eclectic panel of industry professionals, including active international curators, collectors, and gallerists, who are experienced in assessing a wide spectrum of contemporary art practices. Whether your entry focuses on painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, printmaking, textiles, video art, or performance, every submission is evaluated through multiple expert lenses. Instead of comparing technical parameters across different formats, the panel focuses on visual strength, conceptual depth, storytelling, and artistic vision. For spatial or performative works, our team evaluates both the core concept and its audience impact, working directly with shortlisted artists to adapt their practice to our Berlin gallery space.

Can I apply with work that is part of a limited edition, or work that is already committed to future projects?

Yes, provided the specific edition number or physical piece you submit is available for sale and not exclusively consigned to another gallery during the timeline of the prize and exhibition. If an artwork is sold after your submission but prior to the shortlist announcement, please inform us immediately so our curation team can discuss suitable alternatives or alternative edition numbers from your series. This flexibility makes our open call perfect for photographers, printmakers, sculptors, and artists working with limited editions or series.

If I am selected for the Shortlist, who pays for shipping and insurance to Berlin?

Shortlisted artists are responsible for the logistics and costs of transporting their work to and from the exhibition space in Berlin. However, BBA Gallery will assist with logistics by offering guidance, customs advice (for artists shipping from outside the EU), and trusted shipping partner recommendations. The gallery insures all artworks against damage or theft while on site for the duration of the exhibition.

How are gallery commissions and artwork sales structured during the shortlist exhibition?

Works exhibited in the Artist Prize Exhibition are offered for sale to collectors, curators, and our global network, with sales split on a standard 50/50 basis between the artist and the gallery. Full details regarding pricing alignment, payment terms, and consignment conditions are clearly outlined in the Participation Agreement provided to shortlisted artists prior to the show. Selected artists also gain commercial exposure through BBA’s online channels and featured listings on Artsy.

Can I edit my submission or add additional artworks after paying the entry fee?

Yes. Paying the entry fee creates your account portal - the BBA App where you can edit, re-order, or adjust your submission details (artist statement, CV, image descriptions) at any time prior to clicking the final Submit button or before the open call deadline closes on Monday, December 7, 2026, at 23:59 CET. You can also choose to add additional images to your submission by buying additional images of artworks.

How much weight does the artist statement carry compared to the visual artwork itself?

While the visual power and technical execution of your work take center stage, a clear statement provides essential context. Our jury looks for alignment between your visual practice and conceptual intent. A compelling statement helps the panel understand the why behind your work, which can often help when choosing between top-tier submissions. If you feel you need tailored guidance on refining your submission or statement, you can also book a 1-to-1 consultation directly with our gallery directors, online and in person.

What other opportunities exist for Longlisted and Shortlisted artists beyond the final prizes?

Being on the longlist or shortlist opens the door to an ongoing relationship with BBA Gallery. While shortlisted artists participate in our physical Artist Prize, Berlin exhibition, our core mission for both longlisted and shortlisted nominees is to build market visibility both locally and internationally. We feature selected artists across our website, global newsletter network, social media platforms, and on Artsy to connect you with curators and collectors worldwide. Furthermore, our curatorial team actively stays in touch with nominees; in past editions, we have frequently collaborated with selected artists for future solo exhibitions, group shows, and representation opportunities whenever there is a strong curatorial alignment.
