Sandra Lee Stark is a distinguished American photographer and educator whose practice serves as a theatrical exploration of the natural world. With a career spanning over five decades, Stark has dedicated her life to the philosophy of "Making a Picture" rather than simply "Taking" one—a concept she championed as a longtime faculty member at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University. Her work is deeply influenced by the historical still lifes of William Henry Fox Talbot and the vibrant palettes of Paul Outerbridge, reflecting a fascination with how intentionality and the unpredictable forces of nature collide within the frame.

In her recent series, A Walk in the Woods, Stark shifts her focus from placing still lifes within landscapes to staging nature itself within constructed studio settings. The project investigates the "reproduction of nature with nature," creating complex environments that challenge the viewer’s perception of reality. Eschewing digital manipulation, collage, or Photoshop, Stark relies on the tangible materiality of her subjects to build her compositions. The resulting images capture a unique tension between the organic unpredictability of natural elements and the rigorous control of the studio, presenting nature as an active, constructed protagonist.

Sandra Lee Stark’s career is marked by extensive institutional recognition and academic leadership. Represented by the AndersonYezerski Gallery in Boston, her work is held in the permanent collections of the Fogg Museum at Harvard University, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and Tufts University. Her exhibition record includes prestigious venues such as the National Museum of American Art (Smithsonian Institution), the DeCordova Museum, and the Houston Center for Photography.
