SOREN KRAG
ABOUT THE ARTIST
BORN IN DENMARK
LIVES AND WORKS IN BERGEN, NORWAY
Soren Krag is a visual artist whose practice spans textiles, digital tools, and sculptural installations, focusing on the dialogue between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary image-making. Krag’s work consistently raises questions about the intersection of digital pixels and the physical grids of weaving, mosaic, and embroidery, treating these systems as a shared visual language that bridges history and technology.
His latest practice involves two distinct yet related explorations: digital paintings materialized through cross-stitch embroidery and sculptural installations created from second-hand LEGO. In his textile work, the dynamic gestures of a computer mouse are transposed into a slow, meditative act of hand-sewing, where he asserts the "marginal hobby" of cross-stitch into the historically privileged domain of painting by presenting the works on canvas stretchers. Simultaneously, his sculptural work utilizes worn LEGO bricks—marked by the discoloration of previous owners—to explore themes of capitalism, indoctrination, and plastic consumption. These pieces reflect the ideological atmosphere of his childhood in the 1990s, an era defined by neoliberal optimism and the illusion of unimpeded growth.
Krag holds an MFA from the University of Bergen and has been recognized with numerous prestigious awards, including the Lumen Prize for Art and Technology (Nordic Award) and the TALENTE Competition (Winner, Textile). His extensive exhibition history includes solo shows such as ‘Oligarchy Dopamine Rollercoaster’ (SKOG art space, Oslo) and ‘Luxury Entropy Carousel’ (Galleri Konstepidemin, Sweden), as well as participation in international juried exhibitions like ARTAPESTRY and the 7th Riga International Triennial of Textile. Across all media, Krag maintains a critical engagement with systems of production while remaining attentive to visual rhythm and material presence.
