ANDREA CERQUIGLINI
ABOUT THE ARTIST
BORN IN ITALY
LIVES AND WORKS IN VAREDO, ITALY
Andrea Cerquiglini is a visual artist who operates within the paradoxical boundary of language and image, famously claiming to write precisely because he has "nothing to say." His work challenges the traditional function of text, transforming the act of writing into a purely graphic and aesthetic gesture.
His latest practice is an exploration of the notebook as a sacred, enclosed space. Utilizing black and red gel pens on ruled paper, Cerquiglini fills the central double pages of notebooks with a "dripping" of words—a mantra-like litany that melts into a visual texture. For Cerquiglini, the text is not a vehicle for literal meaning, but a rhythmic, sculptural presence. This "drawing through writing" is subsequently preserved within integral display cases made of raw iron, wood, or plexiglass, which serve as a protective "skin" for the delicate, repetitive labor within. He describes his process as carrying the DNA of a distant amanuensis monk, viewing the world through a lens of meticulous, silent repetition.
Cerquiglini has been recognized in numerous international competitions and exhibitions. His notable solo exhibitions include ‘Scrivo perché non ho niente da dire’ at the MUJI shop in Milan and ‘Recinti Apparenti’ at Villa Brentano. He has been a finalist and prize winner in prestigious programs such as the ‘Premio Vittorio Viviani,’ ‘Arte Laguna Prize’ in Venice, and ‘Art Paper International’ in Switzerland. His work has been exhibited globally, from the ‘Heike Arndt DK Art Gallery’ in Berlin to the ‘Light Now Showroom’ in Seoul, and is held in permanent collections such as the Fondazione Dario Mellone.
