ABOUT THE ARTIST
BORN IN CHINA
LIVES AND WORKS IN LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM
Jingjing Xu is a London-based interdisciplinary artist whose practice explores the intersection of social structures, cultural memory, and identity anxieties. Educated at the University of the Arts London, Xu utilizes moving image and digital media to examine the existential predicament of the modern individual. Her work is particularly rooted in her experience as a diasporic East Asian woman in the UK, investigating how subjectivity and belonging are negotiated within repetitive, seemingly futile cycles of societal discipline.
Her latest practice reimagines the Myth of Sisyphus through the lens of Camus’ absurdism, transforming the eternal cycle of the rolling boulder into a contemporary parable of rebellion. In this filmic work, Xu frames the endless repetition not as futility, but as a persistent inquiry into the meaning of existence. For the artist, the "boulder" serves as a powerful metaphor for the structural impasses and gendered frameworks women must navigate. By translating literary and mythological metaphors into sensory visual narratives, she seeks to find "cracks in the repetition" where self-reconstruction and individual liberation become possible.
Xu’s career is marked by a rapid international ascent, with her films featured at major festivals including ASVOFF in Paris, the Fashion Film Festival Amsterdam, and the New York City International Fashion Film Festival. Her work has been showcased in solo and group exhibitions at venues such as Luan Gallery in Beijing and Hackney Gallery in London. Through a methodology grounded in dialogue and relational politics, Jingjing Xu proposes art as a critical tool for restructuring the lived experience, imbuing the struggle against the void with creative potential and salvation.
