LIVES AND WORKS IN BERLIN, GERMANY
Anna Vonnemann is a visual artist whose practice bridges the rigorous intellectual heritage of conceptual art with the lush, technical mastery of the Old Masters. A former student of avant-garde pioneer Franz Erhard Walther at the Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg, Vonnemann translates Walther’s inquiries into material and action into the realm of painting. Her large-scale floral compositions and sensual depictions of the human body serve as a profound exploration of the essence of the medium itself.
Her latest practice focuses on the phenomenon of manual reproduction and self-copying. In an era defined by technical reproducibility, Vonnemann experiments with the inherent impossibility of exact repetition. Her work explores the "significant difference"—the subtle variations and nuances that emerge when a complex subject is painted multiple times. This fascination with the "Rapport" motif—the smallest unit of a potentially infinite structure—draws a line from the order of classical pattern to the post-war "all-over" technique. Each repetition is a meditation on the moment-bound nature of existence, echoing the philosophy of Heraclitus and Roland Barthes.
Vonnemann’s distinguished career has taken her from Hamburg to New York, Israel, and Vienna, where she spent years intensively studying the works of Rubens. Her work has been widely exhibited across Europe, with recent highlights including the NordArt 2025, the BBA Artist Prize shortlist at Kühlhaus Berlin, and solo presentations at the Richard Haitzmann Museum of Modern Art. Whether exploring the rhythmic structures of the "Rapport" or the baroque sense of memento mori, Vonnemann’s paintings only truly come into being through the viewer's engagement, creating a meaningful difference in the moment of activation.
